As a strong believer in lifelong learning, I challenged myself over the summer with formal study. While others were spending the holidays in the surf and by the pool, I spent many days and nights sitting at the computer pouring over academic literature, watching online lectures and doing assignments.
With no formal business qualifications other than the AICD Company Directors Course, I recognised last year that my personal and professional growth would benefit from further study.
I have embarked on the journey to obtain a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Southern Queensland. Yesterday I sat an exam in Accounting and Financial Management as the last piece of assessment to complete the 4 subjects required for a Graduate Certificate in Business - the first step on the MBA journey. With 4 subjects down, there are now 8 to go to achieve the MBA, and over the course of the next 2 years I will continue to learn, challenge and grow.
Formal study is a great way to reflect on your work experiences to date, to challenge your actions and consider how you will apply your newly acquired knowledge in the future. Through the subjects undertaken so far, including marketing, change management and project management, I’ve been able to better understand some of the theoretical concepts that I had innately applied in my previous roles, and also to consider some other techniques and concepts that could have been used.
The learning is helping to shape my approach to running my own business and I’m looking forward to continuing this journey over the coming year.
Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.
